Jamaican Beef Patties with Mai Nguyen

Join guest presenter and Masterchef Alumnus Mai Nguyen and learn how to make your own Jamaican Beef Patties, together with a Carrot Ginger Vinaigrette and Jamaican Steamed Cabbage. Your class will begin with making the pastry. Then while your pastry rests you’ll prepare your beef filling. And once your patties are made and in the oven, Mai will teach you how to make Jamaican Steamed Cabbage, a side dish of Green Cabbage with Bell Peppers and Scotch Bonnets, as well as a Carrot Ginger Vinaigrette to add some zing to your Patties.

Ingredients for Jamaican Beef Patties*: dough (all purpose flour, ground turmeric, curry powder, salt, shortening, butter), filling (1 lb ground beef – can be lean or regular, onion, garlic, scotch bonnet pepper, ginger, green onions, fresh thyme, paprika, ground allspice, vegetable oil, breadcrumbs, beef stock, soy sauce, sugar, salt, ground black pepper.

Ingredients for Carrot Ginger Vinaigrette*: carrots, onion, ginger, scotch bonnet, garlic, white vinegar, sugar, salt, neutral oil (grapeseed, canola etc.).

Ingredients for Jamaican Steamed Cabbage*: green cabbage, red and green bell pepper, carrot, tomato, onion, green onion, scotch bonnet pepper, fresh thyme, garlic.

*please note that we will be discussing potential substitution for ingredients during your class

Class Fee: $27.50 plus GST. Your Fee Includes: A 120 minute virtual class, including a virtual recipe pack with info on equipment needed. Our recipes are distributed manually. If you sign up within 24 hours of your class time, you may not receive the recipe in advance. We will attach it in Zoom Chat at the start of your class. Please use the ingredient list above to shop for your class.

Software Requirement: We are using Zoom for our virtual classes. If you aren’t already using Zoom you can download their free app for Windows, Mac, Android or Apple iOS here. Upon purchase, your meeting ID and password will be included in your Event Confirmation email – please be sure to save this information as you will need it to join your class.
