Virtual Cooking Class: Vietnamese Rice Noodles – Beef Pho

This Winter 2021 our favourite Masterchef Alumna Mai Nguyen is teaching our 3 month series of virtual cooking classes on Asian Rice Noodles. You can join us for just one class, or all three (from our class bundles page). For this first installment she’ll be teaching Beef Pho. She’ll start with the broth, which we’ll make in an instant pot so it’s ready to eat for your dinner tonight: but if you’d rather cook it slowly on the stove you can finish your Pho the next day. And we’ll take a break from our online cooking class while our broth is cooking then come back to finish it with freshly sliced beef and garnishes just in time for your evening supper. NOTE: you will need an instant pot or pressure cooker if you plan to eat your pho on the night of  your class.

Ingredients for Beef Pho Broth: 1 lb oxtail, 2 lb beef knuckle bones, 1 lb beef marrow bones, yellow onion, fresh ginger, cinnamon, whole star anise pod, whole cloves, cardamom pods, fennel seeds, black peppercorns, fish sauce, yellow rock sugar (or granulated sugar/brown sugar).

Ingredients for Beef Pho: beef pho broth, fresh pho noodles (we like Sincere Orient brand), beef eye round or top sirloin, Vietnamese beef meatballs, yellow onion, green onions, cilantro.

Optional Garnishes: bean sprouts, Thai basil (we strongly recommend), lime wedges, sliced jalapeños, bird eye chilies, hoison sauce, sriracha, ground pepper.

Class Fee: $25.00 plus GST (pricing is per device and allows multiple participants to attend using a single device). Your Fee Includes: A 90 minute cooking class plus a recipe pack including info on equipment needed. Our recipes are distributed manually. If you sign up within 24 hours of your class time, you may not receive the recipe in advance. We will attach it in Zoom Chat at the start of your class. Please use the ingredient list above to shop for your class – if our ingredient list isn’t up yet, then the recipe is in the works and it’s coming very soon!

Software Requirement: We are using Zoom for our virtual classes. If you aren’t already using Zoom you can download their free app for Windows, Mac, Android or Apple iOS hereUpon purchase, your meeting ID and password will be included in your Event Confirmation email – please be sure to save this information as you will need it to join your class.

We use Zoom for our online classes. If you aren’t already using Zoom you can download their free app for Windows, Mac, Android or Apple iOS here.

Once downloaded Zoom will help you set up your free account then you’re ready to join us. Zoom will prompt you and ask for permission to use your devices camera and audio, please accept the requests. Once logged in click “Join” from the home page and enter your Meeting ID, which will be sent to you by email with your recipes.
